Varnish is a bitch to do right, I'll tell you that. It was awesome, though, with a $4 table and $30 in stain, varnish, and other supplies I was able to get a table that most people would easily pay $200+ for.

Nice table!

How much is your time worth, and how long did it take? ;)

No one of consequence
I think you are missing the point SiberX

Paying $34 and feeling pride and accomplishment every time you use that table = priceless.

For everything else there is Ikea and crap you don't care about.

I hope we all have time to do something we enjoy and feel accomplishment in doing. What better could you do with your time? Watch TV? Surf the net?

Nice table.

I spent 10-15 hours on it(not counting the hours of waiting for stain and varnish to dry). No one of consequence pretty much has my philosophy down.

I was not trying to be down on the decision to redo the table to have something unique and your own that you can have pride in. God knows I've spent hundreds of hours making, improving or rebuilding my own stuff because I could and because I wanted to. I probably spent something around 50-200 hours modifying my current keyboard with a custom controller that I designed and built myself - and I'm very proud of it. I'm not under the illusion I either saved or made money doing it though.

The implication that doing this kind of stuff somehow saves money or is financially worth the time put into it is somewhat misguided. There's more reasons to do things than just because of money, though - and some things can be worth a lot more to your personally than they would be to somebody else as a result ;)

SiberX: sorry, I guess _I'm_ the one that missed your point.

I am in 100% agreement with your last paragraph above
